Concerned About Speeding In The Rim?

While speeding in the neighborhood is one of the most frustrating (and dangerous) activities that aggravate neighbors (and the Board), we must realize that we are not alone with this problem.  All over Austin, it is a sign of today’s active lifestyle, attitudes, and human behavior.

The Board is trying.  We have discussed ways to increase safety in the neighborhood, and have so far acted on all reasonable suggestions from owners.

  1. We have a new “Slow Down, Blind Driveway Ahead” sign on Waymaker Way that has been erected at the suggestion of a neighbor. (Have you seen it?  We hope it works!)

  2. New Speed Limit 15 mph signs will be installed at both entrances.

  3. Our latest Inner Greenbelt survey (results will be announced soon) is giving us guidance as to what neighbors want (and don’t want) to do with our “inner loop gem”, some of which relate to diverting people from the road into other recreational areas.

  4. At the suggestion of a neighbor, the Board has looked into electronic speed display signs in the neighborhood (as seen in some surrounding neighborhoods).  They are costly and we have an unverified report that they are not suitable for small private communities.

  5. Neighborhood personal videos have shown bike riders speeding in parts of the Rim, and we have put out notices for neighbors to slow down and be aware of walkers, skate boarders, and speeding bike riders in the road.

  6. Neighbors have noted that package delivery vehicles and food delivery cars are among those that often speed.  This is somewhat understandable, but difficult to control.

  7. Some neighbors have noted that security gates will naturally slow vehicles as they enter and exit the neighborhood.   This is being discussed, since security gates have other advantages as well.

Our HOA lawyer has indicated that speed limit signs (even multiple signs) do little to slow drivers, and that speed humps/bumps are the most effective way to slow down vehicles.  However, these are frustrating, annoying, and unwanted by many neighbors and drivers.

The Board welcomes any and all suggestions (even out-of-the-box ideas) on how to slow traffic in the neighborhood.  In the meantime, defacing our neighborhood with unauthorized painted signs in the road or hand-drawn signs attached to trees are not the answer, are in violation of our rules and regulations,   If you want to put up a “Slow Down” sign in front of your unit or somewhere in the road, you must seek approval from management or the Board of Directors.
